Not all hats are made the same. Some companies use the heat press method: an adhesive glues the patch to the hat, often using synthetic material or faux leather instead of real hide. This lowers the cost of materials and speeds up production, which is why it is common.
The real difference between the two comes down to application. Glue can come loose in the elements, and that is when corners start to pull up. The type of adhesive, how it is applied, and the conditions it faces all play a part in how well it holds.
We only use full grain leather. Nothing fake, nothing pre-dyed or precut, no shortcuts. Every patch is sewn onto the hat with an industrial machine, so it stays on no matter the circumstances, not just until the glue gives out.
Full grain leather is the top layer of the hide. It shows the natural grain of the skin and any imperfections, which gives every patch its own character. Synthetic material cannot replicate that. No two Saltgrain patches are exactly alike, and that is the point.
